Build a Minichord

Join us at FirstBuild for a hands-on electronics, music-making, and 3D printing workshop where you’ll assemble your own Mini Chord, a pocket-sized open-source synthesizer inspired by classic chord instruments. The Mini Chord features chord selector buttons, a touch-sensitive “harp” playing area, customizable presets, and USB-MIDI support, making it a fun tool for musicians, makers, and curious beginners alike.

During this class, participants will learn basic soldering, electronics assembly, and 3D printing concepts while building a functional musical instrument they can take home. We’ll walk through component identification, dry-fit assembly, soldering, case printing, final assembly, and testing. Ages 18+ or 13-17 with parent/guardian are welcome. Thursday May 14th, 5pm - 8 pm.

No music theory, electronics, or 3D printing experience is required, just a willingness to learn, make, and experiment. FirstBuild is a hands-on makerspace and microfactory built around collaboration, creativity, and the belief that whatever you’re passionate about, you can “make it here.”

Participants will leave with:

  • A fully assembled Mini Chord synthesizer in a 3D-printed case
  • A basic understanding of soldering and electronics assembly
  • An introduction to 3D printing
  • A new way to explore sound, chords, and electronic music
  • This class is based on the open-source Mini Chord project created by Benjamin Poilve. Project files, firmware, software, and documentation are available on GitHub: BenjaminPoilve/MiniChord .
