Jimmy DiResta Judging FirstBuild Hackathon
Master Maker Jimmy DiResta
Jimmy DiResta will be judging the FirstBuild Hackathon, and we couldn’t be more excited! There aren’t a lot of makers who reach celebrity status from their craftsmanship, but if you’re passionate about woodworking, DIY projects, and maker culture then you’re probably familiar with Jimmy DiResta.
DiResta has starred in a variety of maker-themed TV shows and has a variety of features in publications such as Make magazine. He co-authored the book, “Workshop Mastery with Jimmy DiResta” along with John Baichtal. His latest claim to fame is his role as Shop Master on NBC’s, “Making It” hosted by Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman. Diresta also hosts a popular podcast with the same title.
Jimmy DiResta has been a maker since childhood, but his early career focused on designing toys such as those squeezable slime balls kids love. He also builds custom guitars and always has personal projects going on. His brother, a comedian from NYC, was breaking into television and recruited Jimmy to help with his first televised show, “Trash to Cash” on the FX Network.
DiResta’s FirstBuild Connection
One of our FirstBuild engineers, Tim Gillespie, was able to arrange the partnership with DiResta. Gillespie has been a longtime fan of Jimmy DiResta since, “Trash to Cash” first aired. Gillespie met DiResta at the Maker Faire in New York City where he was taking requests from kids to shape Styrofoam blocks into a variety of forms with a bandsaw. DiResta is a master of the bandsaw as you will see in many videos on his YouTube channel, which currently has over 1.3 Million subscribers. Gillespie struck up a conversation with DiResta and told him about the FirstBuild makerspace in Louisville. DiResta mentioned he visits the Louisville area occasionally for his collaboration with Bulleit Bourbon. They exchanged emails and kept in touch.
Make the Hackathon
Gillespie has been looking for an opportunity to invite Jimmy DiResta to FirstBuild, and there is no better time than to be our special guest judge at our 2018 Mega Hackathon. Makers will gather at FirstBuild on September 15-16 for a two-day extravaganza where they will form teams to come up with innovative solutions for the home by hacking on appliances. The teams will compete for prizes that are voted on by a panel of judges. There couldn’t be anyone more qualified to judge the competition than Jimmy DiResta.
It’s not too late to get involved and present your maker skills to the master of makers. Sign up today for the FirstBuild “Hack the Home” Mega Hackathon!
