What were you doing when you were 4 years old? Chasing your childhood dog through the neighborhood…running down the ice cream man? Now imagine yourself without the ability to walk.
Evander, a four-year-old who was thought unable to walk due to a tumor that left him paralyzed, is now beginning to receive therapy from Louisville Frazier Rehab center with the help of some fine minds.
Winston Rauchm and his like-minded group of graduate students from UofL’s Bioengineering department are working together with Frazier Rehab Institute to develop new equipment for children like Evander. Their new design, called “Beta” (secondary prototype), tailors the adult-centered equipment at Frazier into a body weight support system for pediatric patients.
This new pediatric body weight support system is used in the rehabilitation of pediatric spinal cord injury patients, like Evander, who comes with his mom from Australia every summer to receive this unique treatment. This project is a joint venture with scientists and researchers from the Neurosciences Collaborative center at Frazier Rehab Institute downtown and the UofL Department of Bioengineering.
FirstBuild had the privilege of co-creating a few brackets on the Beta system, which will be used to help therapists situate themselves around the patient to more effectively administer locomotor care.
